NORTHGATE STATE SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM

Chaplaincy Overview and Work Plan

QLD State School Chaplaincy

QLD State School chaplaincy is a service that provides spiritual, ethical, and personal support to the school community of students, parents and staff. Chaplains are present in schools at the invitation of the Principal, in consultation with the local community and with the support of the Parent and Citizens Association.

What does a School Chaplain do?

A school chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school and provide a listening ear, caring presence, and a message of hope. They care for students struggling with issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown, and depression. Chaplains run positive, fun activities for students and foster a supportive, caring school community.

The partnership between the school and the chaplain, supported by local churches, businesses and community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance. These positive relationships help young people to face difficult issues, and provide hope, connection, meaning, and purpose.

  Three Models of School Chaplaincy

Three models of chaplaincy are available to schools. Under the Pastoral Care model the chaplain provides an additional dimension to the school’s care, guidance and support of students, especially where spiritual and religious or ethical needs arise. Under the Mentoring model the chaplain acts as a role model for students and assists in the development of supportive relationships for, with and among students. Under the Educational Support model the chaplain participates in the school as a guest presenter in classrooms when the students are studying subjects with religious themes.

  Northgate SS Chaplaincy

The primary role of the chaplain at Northgate is to provide a role model whereby the chaplain will act as a role model for students, assisting in development of supportive relationships for, with and among students. The service is available to everyone in the school community regardless of their religious beliefs.

What will Chaplaincy look like at Northgate in 2009?

At Northgate during 2009 I will assist with sporting events and cultural programs, attend school camps, assist in classrooms and interact with students in the playground, facilitate programmes such as ‘The Virtues Project’ and ‘Seasons For Growth’ to help with the development of social and personal/life skills. Students may request to see me on an individual basis for support in personal matters.

  Will my child be involved?

The chaplaincy programme is voluntary and students choose whether or not they want to be a part of the activities that are offered. Parents will be consulted if their child wishes to be involved in ongoing one-to-one meetings with the chaplain or in any programme or group involving spiritual, religious or ethical content. Parents have the right to refuse permission for their child to be involved in the chaplaincy programme.

How can you contact me?

ROLE:

A school chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school, providing a listening ear, caring presence, and message of hope. They care for students struggling with confusing relationships, peer pressure and self-esteem issues, family breakdown, depression, suicide, bullying, drug issues, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Chaplains run positive, fun activities for young people, both in and out of school, and foster a supportive, caring school community. This includes support for at risk students, support for staff and families from the wider school community, and spiritual support and direction for the school community.

The partnership between the school and the chaplain, supported by local churches, businesses and community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance. These positive relationships help young people to face issues, and provide hope, connection, meaning, and purpose.
