Gold Cost Titans Visit Northgate

On Monday the 16th November 2009, three of the Gold Coast Titans under 20s players came to visit Year 2/3. They talked about the environment and saving water. They showed a video of two A grade players (Luke Bailey and William Zillman) talking about how to save the environment. They asked questions about the story and gave away prizes if you got the answer right. One of the players in the under 20s, Kurt Foggo, had massive muscles and read out a story to us and asked questions and gave away prizes at the end! The Team Manager Emma Ballantine was very nice and gave away a team poster and the players signed it. They also signed several rugby league balls for us to have at school.

It was a lot of fun and the year 2/3s had a ball. We hope to see them again in future. Go the Titans!

Under 8's Day

It was a great day to be under 8 when Northgate State School celebrated under 8’s day on Friday 29 May. It was great to see many parents, and grandparents come along to celebrate the morning with us. Students rotated through many activities including face painting, water and sand play, musical instruments, painting, Lego and the jumping castle to name a few.

Congratulations to all involved and a big thankyou to our teachers and teacher aides for their work to make the day possible.

Chaplaincy Week

Northgate State School is lucky to have Bek as our chaplain 2 days per week. On Friday 29 May we also celebrated Chaplaincy Week and recognised the wonderful work our chaplain does for our school community.

Miss Bek Ang works at Northgate State School on Tuesday’s and Friday’s and is available to students, staff and parents. She is a valuable member of our staff and we thank her dearly for the work she does for our school community.

As part of the Chaplaincy week celebrations Bek organised a giant game of twister on our tennis courts and staff enjoyed a beautiful morning tea with Bek.

Building the Education Revolution

Northgate State School has been successful in making round one for both the National Schools Pride and the P21 components of the Federal Governments Building the Education Revolution Initiative. We have had initial meetings with the project managers and in the coming weeks I am confident we will see construction starting.

Timelines are very tight and it appears at this stage Northgate State School will have the following projects breaking ground by the end of next term:

* New Prep Playground

* Tennis Court Resurface

* Wireless internet throughout the school

* New Library Building on the Northern Oval

* New Hall on the Eastern Oval

As soon as we have final plans for these constructions works they will be published in the office foyer. Very exciting times ahead for our school.

It was wonderful to see our Federal Member, the Honourable Wayne Swan MP last Friday. Mr Swan wanted to see first hand our school and be briefed on the progress made with the BER project.

Year 567 Camp at Maroon Dam

We farewelled our Yr 567 students and staff on Monday morning 18 May as they headed for Maroon Outdoor Education Centre. The Year 5’s stayed from 18-20May whilst the Year 6&7 students completed a full week at the centre.

The students enjoyed camping out, rock climbing, high ropes, canoeing and swimming to mention a few activities undertaken during the week.

Camp was an exciting opportunity for both students and staff and we would like to acknowledge our 567 staff for their efforts in ensuring the camp was well organised and managed. It certainly is a 24 hour day job when you take 90 students away on camp but well worth it!

Thank you to Gabe and Catalina for doing such a good job and thank you to Mr Liddle from the Nundah/Northgate RSL for attending and participating in our service. Each Class made some beautiful wreaths which were laid under our flag pole in a very fitting ceremony.

We were very proud to attend the community service at Memorial Park on Saturday April 25and would like to acknowledge the many students (over 35 of them) and parents who attended. Thank you for your support both for remembering such an important day in Australians History and in representing our school.

It was very moving when all our student representatives got up to lay their wreaths. They did a wonderful job. Well done to all the students who attended and thankyou.

Channel 7 Helicopter Visit

On Wednesday 22 April the Channel 7 Helicopter as well as popular weather presenter John Schluter visited our school. The students stood on our oval in the shape of a large 50 which appeared on the news that evening. Mr Schluter spoke with our Year 5,6&7 students before taking a tour of the school.

Mr Schluter was most impressed with the effort Northgate State School puts into saving our planet. He was most interested in our use of the water from our water tanks, the solar energy system and the web site that tracks our school’s energy production and consumption.

Whilst Mr Schluter enjoyed the company of our senior students, our juniors were inspecting the helicopter. Our Prep/One class were so excited that they immediately returned to class with the aim of building their very own helicopter in their classroom. It looked fantastic!

Nudgee Beach Canoe Adventure

On Monday 30 March, eleven Year 7 students travelled to Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre to take part in a canoe adventure from Nudgee Beach to Shorncliffe.

An eventful and action packed day was had by all. “There were no crocodiles as the sharks kept them away.”

Touring within the green zone and learning more, first hand, about the role of the mangroves, the ecosystem within and the importance of conserving the area was a focal point for the day.

We also learnt about the skill of canoeing and how to manoeuvre the boats through winding narrow creeks.

Lisa Newman Visits Northgate

On Friday 27 March Lady Mayoress Lisa Newman visited Northgate State School and addressed our weekly parade. It was wonderful to hear Mrs Newman speak to the children supporting our chaplaincy program and speaking about our virtue of the week. Mrs Newman spent the morning talking with students and seeing the great work occurring at Northgate state School.

567N Visit to Parliament House

On Thursday, 26th March, Northgate 5,6,7 N students set off by train, to visit Parliament House, The Law Courts and the Police Museum, in the city.

Our first stop was Parliament House, where our guide took us into the original, beautiful old sandstone building, where State Parliament sits. We sat in the old Legislative Chamber, which is coloured in red, and has a beautiful chandelier, valued at $400 000.

We then visited the Members’ Reading Room, which had huge, leather chairs made in the 1800s, from special Queensland timbers.

Our next stop was the chamber of the Legislative Assembly. Because of the recent election, Parliament was not sitting, so our class sat in their chairs and pretended we belonged to the Government or the Opposition.

Here, we acted in the roles of Premier, Opposition Leader and other Ministers and Shadow Ministers. The Minister for Education, took delight in introducing a Bill, requesting that homework be abolished.

After the Second and Third Reading of this Bill, it was passed in favour of the Government, 18 to 12. The proposal that homework be abolished was passed and a new law was made. If only it was true!!!!

After an early lunch, we walked through the Botanical Gardens, to the Law Courts, where the Year 6 and 7 students watched a criminal trial in the District Court. We had to be really quiet and bow to the judge when we walked in. We then visited the Supreme Court, where we sat inside a replica of the Queensland Government Yacht, Lucinda, where Sir Samuel Griffith drafted the Australian Constitution, in 1891.

The Year 5s meanwhile visited the Police Museum, where they had to solve a crime.

We all had a wonderful day and found it extremely interesting and lots of fun.

Kiri and Claire, Year 5,6,7N

Student Council Representatives 2009

A special parade was conducted on Friday 6 March to invest our 2009 student council representatives. Congratulations to our new school leaders. We wish them a very exciting and productive year.

Our student council meet on the 2nd and 8th Monday of each term. They provide advice and guidance to the principal on school matters and organise the term event, a student centred activity designed to celebrate the outcomes of each term and recognise that the student’s hard work has not gone unnoticed.

96.5 FM School Excursion

On Friday 13th March 96.5FM Family Radio Station broadcasted "The Family Show - with Liam, Robbie and Ness" LIVE from Northgate State School.

They based camp in the Quadrangle and began the show at 6:00am.

There was a jumping castle and games for the children, a coffee cart for parents and a sausage sizzle breakfast put on by the school's P&C.

There were many parents, students, staff and community members who joined us at Northgate from 6:00am.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see how radio works. The announcers involved many of the students to be guest announcers and our very own Principal was interviewed and participated in the very cool "RADIO SCATTEGORIES".

The 96five mascot "Romeo the Radio Dog" was also a special guest.

Great Race 2009

In preparation for the annual cross country which will be held early in term 2 we are currently running "The Great Race". This is a virtual race (and sports house competition) from Brisbane to Gladstone initially; however, we usually end up continuing on to Cairns.

Students need to prepare their bodies for the 1, 2 or 3km cross country race in the hope of obtaining a place in our school team racing in the City District competition in mid term 2.

The Great Race is held every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for Year 2-7 students as part of our Get Active Campaign. Parents, Grandparents and even siblings in strollers are most welcome to join in. A reminder to all students and parents that all Year 2-7 students at school from 8:30am are required to participate in The Great Race as part of the Minister's Get Active Program.

Preppies and Year 1 students go to the classrooms at 8:30am on these days but will be involved in their own Get Active Campaign in the very near future.
